How to Detect and Prevent Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is currently the second largest cause of cancer-related death for men, second only to lung cancer. If you are a man and are older than 20, you may want to start thinking about getting a regular prostate exam and making lifestyle changes which are not only better for your general health, but will help prevent the development of prostate cancer. While prostate cancer is pervasive, it is not as deadly as other forms of cancer. In fact, many experts suggest approximately 50% of men will develop some form of prostate cancer before the age of 50, but a large share of those who do will lead a fairly normal life and die of other causes. But dont take this as a mandate to live an unhealthy lifestyle; to the contrary, this could be taken as quite a serious warning. If many men could live without knowing about the condition, this means it is easy to ignore it will it develops and becomes more serious. So how exactly can you tell if you have this cancer? The symptoms are subtle, but if you pay attention closely, you will know. The first thing to watch out for is a decreased velocity of urination. If you feel as if there is a bump or a clog blocking urine excretion, you may have an early form of prostate cancer. Additionally, if you experience minor pain during sexual intercourse, you may also have an early from of prostate cancer. If you find that you are experiencing any of these problems, it is absolutely crucial that you get a prostate exam. If you catch your prostate cancer in an earlier stage, it wont be as much of a problem as it would if you allow it to spread to out of the rectal-scrotal area. What additional factors might put you at risk? If you smoke and drink regularly, you have a much higher chance of developing prostate cancer. Additionally, if you consume red meat and consume animal products, such as milk and butter, you also have an increased chance of developing prostate cancer. Regardless of your background and the amount of risk factors you are exposed to, you should consider living a more balanced lifestyle to avoid prostate problems down the line. These lifestyle changes will also improve your overall level of health, which means you can only gain from implementing them. Another important thing you should consider doing is visiting your physician immediately to determine if you are at risk; and, if so, what steps you can take to reduce your chances of getting prostate cancer. Additionally, if you believe you may already have prostate cancer, you will want to seek out advice from a physician. A recent study at the University of Colorado suggests that many prostate cancer sufferers repeatedly misdiagnose their own symptoms; and then incorrectly determine pathways for treatment, basing their decisions on anecdotal evidence, advice from friends (and other sufferers), and a mish-mash of evidence taken from different sources. This can be an especially dangerous course of action, as it leads people to make important decisions about their health based on misleading and often incorrect information. Physicians, however, must keep up with the most recent literature, which will include treatment for cancer. If you approach your physician, you should be able to find out what types of treatment are available, what types of treatment are most effective, and what side effects each treatment type has. Furthermore, almost all patients interviewed resisted the idea of prostate surgery out of a belief that it would cause incurable impotence. If you believe you might have some symptoms of cancer (and if you are also somewhat confused about which pathway is best for diagnosis and treatment) you should get a referral from your physician to a Urologist. The Urologist will be able to begin working you through a battery of different tests and options to determine the best way in which to identify and overcome the problems you are experiencing.
