Is Prostate Medicine Really Necessary?

We have all seen the ads on television and on the internet that are directed at men who may have enlarged prostates. These medicines that require a prescription are often expensive and may have several unwanted side effects. Yet the message is everywhere. For instance, here is one of the clips,- if you are a man and if you have trouble urinating, you probably have an enlarged prostate, and you need our prostate medicine.

Well, that is true, at least to some extent. Most men do develop an enlarged prostate as they age. It is part of a man's natural aging process much like menopause in women. In some ways, it is kind of inevitable, and some men will have it worse than others. And, as the ads say, one of the symptoms is difficulty with urination. But what the ads don't tell you is that prostate medicine may not be necessary at all. You see, an enlarged prostate is not a disease; it is not at all unusual, and it does not increase your risk for prostate cancer. It may cause you some discomfort or inconvenience, but it is not dangerous to your health. In fact, the side effects from the prostate medicine may cause you more serious discomfort than the enlarged prostate itself!

Do you really want to fork over the cash for something that you do not really need and that may do more harm than good?

This is where a visit with your doctor comes in. If your prostate has enlarged to the point that it causes you pain or trouble with urinating and has become more than an annoying little inconvenience, then prostate medicine may be able to help. But chances are, you do not really need it.  Your doctor can help you make that decision.

Even if you decide not to use prostate medicine, there are things you can do to help ease the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, and make it less of a hassle in your life. For example, alcohol is a diuretic; it causes you to need to urinate more often. Caffeine is also a diuretic. Avoid both of these particularly at night in order to reduce night time visits to the bathroom. Drink lots of water--staying properly hydrated helps to maintain the proper flow of urine but make sure you do not drink it all at once. Drink a little at a time throughout the day, and do not drink anything too close to bedtime. Keep yourself in good physical condition; lose any excess pounds you may be carrying around, and exercise regularly. Strain on the body, whether caused by excess weight or a sedentary lifestyle, can exacerbate the symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

For your sake, do not just fall back on prostate medicine. Nine times out of ten, there is a better way of keeping the symptoms of your enlarged prostate under control. Remember, an enlarged prostate is uncomfortable, and an enlarged prostate is inconvenient. It is not dangerous to your health. To be safe, have your doctor check you out and discuss what you should do if you run into swelling.
